Dancing Queens Ready To Turn The Beat Around At Charity 70s Dance Party By Keith Hagarty
It's time to dust off your finest polyester leisure suit, whip out those platform shoes and do the Hustle because the 70s Dance Party is coming to Howell.
Held on Saturday, May 19, from 7:30 to 11 p.m. at the Southard Firehouse on Route 9 North and New Friendship Road, the dance is being held as a fundraiser for the sick granddaughter of one of the firefighters. All proceeds from the event will go to the Southard Fire Department Relief Fund.
The 70s Dance Party is a way for those old enough to remember the decade to relive some nostalgia and for the younger generation to time warp into a strange land where the pet rock ruled, shirt collars were wider than an airplane's wing and Star Wars was born.
"We did it two years ago and had so much fun that we thought we'd do it again," said Anna Ornstein, the organizer of the dance.
Ornstein promises a great time will be had by everyone who attends, no matter their dancing skills, or lack thereof. All residents of Howell are invited to come out and join the fun.
"It's family style, so you can bring your children too and have a really great time," she said. "It's wonderful, it really is such a fun, family event. They're out there dancing, having fun. What better way to spend a night?"
The members of the Southard Fire Department have a long-standing tradition of being there to lend a helping hand, especially for those residents most in need.
"I just think they're awesome," said Ornstein. "If there's someone in need, they're out there being the first ones to help."
The Southard Fire Department Relief Fund is yet another extension of the firefighters' generosity, said Ornstein.
"If there's anyone in need at the firehouse or in the area, they're able to donate money to them," she said.
Being part of an exciting event that blends music and laughter for a good cause is what being part of the community is all about for Ornstein.
"I just feel very blessed I'm able to help," she said. "If everyone just took an hour of their time to do something for someone, we'd have a much better place to live."
In addition to some classic disco and rockin' 70s tunes, the dance will offer other festivities as well, including a best dressed 70s outfit contest, 70s trivia, a cash bar, gift auction, free appetizers donated by Applebee's of Howell and coffee and dessert courtesy of Dunkin Donuts.
"Everyone dresses in the motif, so it's going to really be a lot of fun," said Ornstein. "Where else could you go to have a bite to eat and dance all night long for just $20?"
Tickets for the dance party are $20 for adults, and $10 for children 13 and under. Tickets are available at the Southard Fire Department, Young's Appliance on Route 9 South (just past the Kmart shopping plaza), 732-363-0466; Ramtown Liquors on Newtons Corner Road, 732-840-8420; or by sending a check payable to "Southard Fire Department Relief Fund" to Anna Ornstein at 5 Amanda Lane, Howell, NJ 07731.
For more information about the event, call Ornstein at 732-961-0370, who encourages residents to get their tickets early as seating is limited.
